Albemarle High School

?AHS offers a comprehensive academic program culminating in dual credit and AP courses in all core,  technology, world language, and fine arts subject areas. Nearly half of AHS students enroll in world language courses. Albemarle offers extensive, award-winning performing and visual arts programs. As of December 2008, AHS is one of only eight high schools with more than 1,500 students to be nationally recognized by Rick DuFour’s organization, “Learning Tree,” as a National Exemplar of the Professional Learning Community Model.

Albemarle High School is a learning community that inspires all students to pursue their dreams, becoming lifelong learners and responsible citizens in a global society. We are one of the largest and oldest operational high schools in Central Virginia. Since 1953, the student body has more than doubled, and the faculty has increased from 40 to nearly 150 teachers. Over half of our teachers have advanced collegiate degrees, and all are highly qualified under the No Child Left Behind Act provisions. Additionally, 26 percent of our teachers have more than 20 years of teaching experience. Around 70 support staff members join teachers in serving almost 1,800 students. AHS is renowned for its athletic program, which includes the well known Patriotic Athletic Leaders (P.A.L.s) program, a club created by athletic director Deb Tyson to build leadership and personal high standards among student participants. The school has an impressive competition-quality marching band and concert, jazz and symphonic bands, as well as a comprehensive choir and orchestra program. The drama department includes the award-winning Albemarle Players and the improvisation team "Off The Cuff," who perform in various venues throughout the year. A new Math, Engineering & Science Academy (MESA) opened at AHS in 2009, catering to students who are interested in pursuing a career in engineering or design.
