In 2010, Baker-Butler was presented the Governor’s Award for Educational Excellence. Some of Baker-Butler’s cutting-edge features include an Exploratorium, a dynamic music club, and a unique art sculpture park where students can enjoy life-size creations interspersed throughout the campus.
What We Do
Baker-Butler Elementary School, with 608 students enrolled, is the newest school in the county. Opening in 2002, the school serves grades pre-K through fifth with a total of 88 staff members, with 45 being certified staff.
The school is located in a rural setting off of Proffit Road near the Charlottesville-Albemarle Airport, and is named after two monumental gentlemen. James Robert Butler was the first African-American to serve on the county Board of Supervisors and was known for his ability to establish fair teacher salaries. He was a strong advocate for education, contributing to the foundation of the Charlottesville-Albemarle Technical Education Center (CATEC), and was the first African-American Executive Director of an Extension Service office in Virginia. John Edward Baker participated in the military and went on to serve as an at-large School Board Member on the first elected School Board. He was School Board Chairman for two years and established a mentoring program for new teachers to ensure their success.
