Join Cville Litter Pickers on Saturday, September 12th for the Monticello Road & Moores Creek Cleanup.
We'll meet at 2:00 PM at 1706 Monticello Road, Charlottesville, VA 22902. Look for the CLP sign.
We're working South Charlottesville: the Monticello Road and Mountain View Street frontage, the lot edges and fence lines, and the Moores Creek floodplain behind them. There are three jobs on this one, and there's a place for every volunteer.
Roadside and lot cleanup covers the street frontage, lot edges and fence lines, and is open to all ages. A second crew will work the access road between Monticello Avenue and Monticello Road, where someone has been dumping cans and bottles in bulk. We'll clear it, separate aluminum from glass on site, and take the recyclable material to the McIntire Recycling Center. That one is a good job for a family working together. The third job is two abandoned campsites, and that work is for adults only. One sits low on the bank of Moores Creek and will wash into the water the next time the creek comes up. The other is holding down a patch of woods that can't start growing back until the material is out. Both may contain hazardous material.
Children are welcome with a parent or guardian and will be directed to the roadside and container areas. We work along city streets, culverts and parking lots, so we ask that children stay with the adult who brought them. Tell us when you arrive and we'll put you on a calmer stretch.
This corner of South Charlottesville is walked, driven, and worked in every day, and it deserves better than what's been left in it. It's also the last stop before the water: Moores Creek runs to the Rivanna and on to the James, so anything sitting on that bank is on its way downstream.
All equipment is provided: grabbers, bags, gloves and safety vests. Wear closed-toe shoes and long pants, and bring water. No experience and no commitment required. Come for the full two hours or whatever part of it you can give.
Please park only in the designated area. Parking anywhere else puts the whole event at risk. We'll post specific parking instructions on our event page before the event.
Light rain doesn't stop us. If conditions are dangerous we'll cancel or postpone, and we make that call about an hour before the start.
Thanks to the Rivanna Conservation Alliance for helping us secure site access and parking for this cleanup.
All volunteers sign a waiver at cvillelitterpickers.org/waiver. Details and upcoming cleanups are at cvillelitterpickers.org.
