Volunteer: Healthcare volunteers needed for public health emergency preparedness & response

The Virginia Medical Reserve Corps is a force of dedicated volunteers who stand ready to lend their support in the event of a public health emergency. By registering in advance to volunteer, you can be mobilized quickly where your your valuable skills are needed most.

The Northwest MRC, formerly the Thomas Jefferson MRC, is a regional MRC unit that serves the population of the Thomas Jefferson Health District. For more information about the Northwest MRC, go to http://www.vdh.virginia.gov/northwestmrc/

Can we count on you in an emergency?

You never know when your community might need you. It could be because of a natural disaster, a biological emergency, a terrorist attack or the outbreak of a communicable disease, such as H1N1. In emergencies, Virginia Medical Reserve Corps (VAMRC) volunteers provide the additional staffing needed to save lives by helping public health teams distribute medication and by offering medical and mental health care.

The VAMRC also supports public health during routine operations by helping reduce chronic diseases, assuring accessibility of health care services, and improving health literacy in the community. As a volunteer, you can attend emergency response training sessions, help address pressing public health issues, and be a member of the public health response team. We urge you to pre-register at www.vamrc.org/vvhs so that your skills can be most effectively utilized.

All health professionals - no matter your practice or specialty - are encouraged to volunteer. From doctors and lab technicians to medical records technicians, nurses, and mental health counselors, your skills can be in high demand during times of crisis. To learn more about the Virginia MRC, go to www.vamrc.org.
