The Community Garden at Yancey Community Center in Esmont, VA works with volunteers to support the BF Yancey Community Food Pantry. Started in 2020, the Community Garden provides fresh vegetables for distribution from the pantry throughout the year. During Family Volunteer Weekend volunteers will be turning the soil and planting onions, lettuce, potatoes, corn, beets, radishes, strawberries, cucumbers, squashes, and pumpkins. Equipment will be provided. Please bring your own mask and plan to wear it at all times. All volunteers should be focused on volunteer work during this event. Those aged 13-17 require active adult supervision.
While the primary focus of this garden is food production, it has also been used as a contemplative space bringing people together to celebrate the seasons.
Please email Anna at aporter@unitedwaycville.org to sign up for a volunteer shift. You should not show up for a volunteer shift until you have heard back from Yancey Community Center’s Program Coordinator: Edward Brooks. Please be sure to follow all Covid-19 guidelines prior to and during your shift. If you are feeling unwell, please reach out to let us know and stay home. Thanks!
