Kid*Vention is Saturday, February 20th at the Key Recreation Center on the Charlottesville Downtown Mall.
What is Kid*Vention?
Kid*Vention is VDM's annual family science festival, bringing 30-40 community organizations with expertise in areas like biology, chemistry, earth science, engineering, physics, and zoology. These exhibitors come together to share exciting activities to spark kids' curiosity about the world around them. We will be welcoming back past favorites, including UVA Chemistry LEAD, the Ivy Creek Foundation, MedExpress, the Piedmont Group of the Sierra Club, and the Charlottesville Astronomical Society. New groups will be joining in on the fun for the first time this year too - keep an eye out for Aloha Mind Math, First Harmonics, and the Rodman Scholars. Last year's event welcomed over 1,000 visitors who had the chance to race robots, see their heartbeat, plant a tree, and make slime. Families join in on the fun from 10 am - 3 pm at the Key Recreation Center on the Downtown Mall.
Volunteering for the event
We are looking for at least 30 volunteers to help us with the following tasks throughout the day:
- event set-up (putting up tables, signs, helping exhibitors unload)
- running the registration table (handle donations, tally visitors)
- greet and direct visitors to/around/from the event
- lead activities at tables where necessary
- help exhibitors run activities
- manage the break room for exhibitors
- float around the event to engage visiting families
- fill in to help at the museum if necessary
- event clean-up (take down tables/signs, clean event space, bring materials back to VDM)
There are two volunteer shifts:
8 am - 12 pm (includes set-up)
12 pm - 4 pm (includes clean-up)
