The Medical Transportation Volunteer will work closely with the Health Liaison and Healthy Futures AmeriCorps member to assist with addressing clients’ transportation needs to medical appointments, as well as other tasks that ensure that clients’ health needs are being met.

The IRC in Charlottesville Youth Mentoring program (MYVA) serves refugee youth or young adults (15-24) to help them positively navigate new communities and advance their educational and vocational goals.  Adult mentors in the Charlottesville community are paired with a mentee and help guide the youth through important life transitions and decisions.  Mentors can form a long-term relationship with their mentee—meeting at least once a month for a minimum of 1 year.  IRC provides ongoing training and support for the Mentors in the program, with regular follow-ups to set goals and track progress.  Participating in the program is expected to be a mutually beneficial and rewarding opportunity for both youth and their Mentor to build intercultural understanding and broaden cultural competency.

Provide round-trip transportation to Youth events.

New Roots Charlottesville supports refugee food security and aids in their transition to the community through gardening, nutrition education, local food access initiatives and small business farming. IRC currently manages New Roots Farm and a few community gardens around town, in addition to providing training and support to numerous additional locations. Help staff and farmers out with ongoing projects (e.g. planting, cleaning, harvesting, organizing, etc).

 ESL Class Assistants provide support with English language lessons, cultural orientation, and friendship to newly arrived refugee individuals or families in a classroom setting. Tutors will concentrate on improving the client’s employability and ability to communicate and succeed in their new life by building practical vocabulary, answering their questions, and encouraging them with social interaction and support.

*Please note this opportunity happens remotely in your own organization or space. Items should be collected and organized off-site and dropped off at The Haven once prepared.

There are many community members -- both housed and unhoused -- who depend on The Haven day shelter as a resource center providing basic necessities like hygiene products and free laundry services. For former guests and community members experiencing severe housing instability we provide folks to-go "hygiene packs" with the most-requested hygiene supplies.

The items can be placed in whatever "pack" you all have: recycled grocery bags (paper or plastic), reusable totes, gallon ziplocs, or any other type of bag.

Each pack must consist of the following items:

- 1-2 rolls of toilet paper

- ziploc bag of laundry pods or powder detergent (enough for a few loads)

- bar of soap

- stick of deodorant

- disposable razor

- full-sized toothbrush and toothpaste

Additional items can be added, such as shaving cream, shampoo, or washcloths, but are not necessary.

Once you’ve collected the supplies and organized the packs (at your own location), please reach out to me (Ocean Aiello) via phone or email to coordinate a drop-off. Drop-offs can occur any weekday between 7:00 am and 5 pm.

AIM has multiple empty slots for volunteers to deliver bags of food or paper/cleaning products to our Senior Reach Program clients. These are especially vulnerable seniors who rely on our deliveries to get through the month. For some, this is the only visitor/in person interaction they have all month long. You can volunteer once per year or once per week - we will accommodate your schedule! We provide everything you need to bring them - you provide your time and vehicle. We have urgent needs for additional volunteers in order to expand this program.

The first Tuesday of every month, the Landscape Crew of RVCC's Building & Grounds Committee gathers for two hours beginning at 8:00 AM to tackle gardening & landscaping projects - generally some pruning, some weeding, or some thinning and transplanting.  We'll start you off with a cup of Trager Brothers' freshly-roasted coffee and hydrate you with fresh mountain water from our well!  It's outdoor work, so it's weather dependent, and suitable gear would include work gloves, hats, long pants, sun protection and some bug repellant.  It would also help if you could also bring gardening tools, including trowels, pruners, loppers, hedge trimmers, etc.  Thanks!

At Wildrock, we believe in sourcing materials second hand whenever possible. We welcome donations of gently used Crocs, woodland creature stuffed animals, nature-related costumes, craft supplies and magnatiles. All materials are used by thousands of children in the community who are included in our nature play programs. Thank you for considering. 

We have 2 courtyards at our facility. One of them has already been adopted and spruced up. The other one is in serious need of the deck being treated and painted, brush being cut back, etc. The courtyard could use some serious TLC in order to provide the residents with an ability to safely go outside and heal. 

Volunteers will help with calling on local businesses seeking sponsors for our new Disability Resources United online guide.  Sponsorship will help ABF to raise funding for our organization. We also need continued help with brainstorming new fundraising ideas throughout the year.  At least a third of our donations should be from our fundraising efforts and each year we need assistance with finding new avenues to pursue to achieve this goal.  We hope you will join our ABF family if you believe you have the skills to help us with our fundraising needs.

The Virginia Discovery Museum is looking for volunteers to maintain the galleries, help prep and run fun programs, assist with birthday parties, and keep the museum running each day. Volunteer regularly and you’ll recognize our members and get to know the best way to have fun and learn with our exhibits.

Museum hours are Monday through Saturday 9:30am-5pm, and open for reserved parties on Sunday. Shifts are 2 hours minimum. Vaccination against COVID is required.

The Virginia Discovery Museum is looking for enthusiastic volunteers to work at our front desk 2.5-3 hours each week! You will be the first person welcoming families into our space, and we will provide training in operation of the Front Desk computer’s point of sale system. Other skills needed are the ability to lightly multitask, answer and relay phone calls, and most importantly to socialize with and help visitors of all ages and backgrounds. This is a sedentary position, but still a great opportunity to meet new people, form relationships with VDM members, and share your Cville knowledge with out-of-towners! Other benefits include free parking and admission passes, and the option to do your own thing (read, knit, etc.) at the desk during our slower hours.

A community member with strong communication, sales, and diplomatic skills to represent the fire company at local civic and Albemarle County events to share the unique needs of the Stony Point community in general, and the fire company in particular.  Duties include attending and participating in the occasional Albemarle County meeting, civic meetings, and network with local churches and neighborhood groups to discuss various fire company services and needs. 

As the operational members are usually focused with more important tasks during events and gatherings, we often don’t have the ability to capture media of what we are doing.

This position would be ideal for a person with a moderate background in professional photography.

This is a community member with strong communication and organizational skills to assist the fire company with organizing office files, correspondence, and station records. Approximately four hours a week.  Day/times are flexible..

This is a charismatic person with good communication and organizational skills to help our membership and recruitment committees with outreach and onboarding of potential members.

The Stony Point Volunteer Fire Company is actively seeking volunteer firefighters, EMTs and driver pump operators. To volunteer in our community, you don’t need any prior experience or training. All of the training and certifications will be provided to you free of charge by the department. The Department of Drama and the Virginia Theatre Festival at the University of Virginia need volunteer ushers to assist patrons find their seats, distribute playbills, and answer general questions.  Ushers also assist during intermission and post-performance.  Training is provided and all volunteer ushers see the show for free!

Performances of UVA Drama productions are generally evening performances during Fall and Spring semesters.  Generally 2-3 productions per semester and each production has 3-6 performances.  These productions would include plays or musicals, and dance concerts.

The Virginia Theatre Festival is the summer professional theatre at UVA.  Performances of VTF productions are both evening and matinees running late June through early August.  Generally 2-3 productions per summer season and each production has 5-12 performances.  These productions would include plays,  musicals, and staged readings.

The Ivy Creek Foundation, which is tasked with caring for and conserving Ivy Creek Natural Area and River View Farm, is looking for volunteers who have an interest in the outdoors and would want to lead hikes that focus on various kinds of flora and fauna.  You get to choose the type of hike that you want to lead based on your interest and background.  These hikes can focus on mostly children, families, or adults. The Ivy Creek Foundation is currently looking for volunteers who are interested in history, with a focus on local, African American, agricultural, and women's history.  We are seeking individuals who would be interested in giving tours of historic River View Farm, which includes the Carr/Greer family cemetery, the home that was built in the 1880s, and the historic barn built in the 1930s.  These tours primarily take place on the weekends from 10:00 am - 12:00 pm and last about 45 minutes.  These tours typically run from April to November and the commitment required is once a month.  There will always be two Docents on-site for safety purposes.  For more information or questions about these volunteer opportunities please contact susie@ivycreekfoundation.org. 

Monticello is seeking friendly individuals who are interested in American history and enjoy sharing it with guests of all ages from around the world. Our Education & Visitor Programs Volunteers staff our Visitor Center gallery spaces and assist in the Monticello mansion in auxiliary roles.  Volunteers are given extensive training and can enjoy a rich program of ongoing educational opportunities.

We will provide you with well researched information and the tour routes. We will schedule the tours and provide you with other support. All you have to do is learn some local history, be willing and able to lead a walking tour that covers about 1/2 mile and lasts about an hour any time of year, and tell factual yet compelling stories. At the ACHS, we believe that everyone has a story to tell.

Looking for church, school, or civic groups, or individuals to orchestrate a medical equipment drive.  With our continued growth, we are often out of certain items and have long waitlists.  Most current need is for shower chairs, tub benches, rollator walkers, wheelchairs, and hospital beds. Volunteers would decide on a specific date and location for event, use social media to get the word out, schedule volunteers for the event date to hand out ABF literature and collect equipment and supplies that are donated and then deliver to the ABF warehouse at the end of the event.

The Clinic depends on volunteer medical and support staff to conduct our mission, including physicians, nursing staff, health counselors, administrative and accounting support, and fund raising support.  We also coordinate a Community Medical Supply Closet and need volunteers who are available on Saturday mornings from 10 am to 11 am to be at the closet (in Stanardsville).

Still needed as of 7/2022. The Free Book Bus is outgrowing its storage space (currently, a guest room in our house). We have recently had to turn down book donations due to a lack of space. Loaves & Fishes Food Pantry's mission is to give food with kindness and compassion to those seeking assistance while providing an opportunity for volunteers to serve their neighbors in Charlottesville and surrounding communities.  In 2021, Loaves & Fishes distributed 2 million pounds of food to over 52,000 people.

Loaves & Fishes relies on 90-100 volunteers each week to help us inspect, sort, pack, and distribute fresh produce, dairy, meat, bread, and shelf-stable commodity items.  Shifts are offered 6 days each week and range in length from 1 to 4 hours.  Volunteers work alongside staff members and training is provided at the start of each shift, so prior experience is not needed for most of our jobs.

The newly installed back stairs and rail need to be finished in terms of landscaping and paving bricks. Materials will be supplied. Volunteers need to be capable of operating shovel and rake.

The front ramp has worn holes. Supplies have been purchased, but they are in need of someone with carpentry skills to help remove the old plants and set the new wood in place. Bracing work may need to be done.

Inside work: The walls in the bathroom area and the area around the kitchen need to be caulked. The VFW will provide caulking materials and caulking guns as well as spray foam.

There is a small graveyard adjacent to property which needs beautification. Volunteers will help rake and trim the area.

The flower beds on both sides of the building need to be spruced up! Volunteers will spread mulch and trim the area.

The Shelter for Help in Emergency operates a 24-hour hotline for victims and survivors of domestic violence who are seeking emergency shelter, or for victims (and their families, friends and community members) who need information and referral services and/or a safe place to talk.  The Shelter/Hotline Volunteer is an integral part of our team. They are often the first point of contact for our services and assist staff in meeting client needs at the Residential Facility. As an important part of our team the Shelter/Hotline Volunteer receives thorough training in issues of domestic violence, agency services, trauma-informed interventions, self-care, advocacy, and cultural humility. This volunteer opportunity is ideal for someone who is caring, nonjudgmental, and committed to making a difference in the lives of victims and survivors of domestic violence. Typical hours are daily 5pm-9pm and Tuesdays 10:30am-12:30pm. Shelter/Hotline Volunteers must have their own transportation and be able to drive themselves to and from their volunteer shifts.

The administrator will help the agency deal with its 19 programs. Duties include thanking donors, writing grants, help directors throughout Virginia, and keep a check on the Executive Director. 

Did you know that on any given day, dozens of immigrant children are locked up at detention facilities near Staunton, Virginia? They may spend months, even years, separated from family, navigating the immigration detention system alone.

This is an opportunity for you to take action to help make sure that all children are treated with kindness and respect by becoming a volunteer with the Young Center for Immigrant Children's Rights. As a volunteer, you will be appointed as the Child Advocate (guardian ad litem) for an immigrant child in federal custody near Staunton, Virginia. The role of the Child Advocate is to meet one-on-one with a child at a local detention center (or virtually), play games and spend time together, learn that child's story over time, and help us advocate for the child with government officials. All of your work will be supported and supervised by a Young Center attorney. Through volunteering, you will have the opportunity to learn about the immigration process and build personal relationships with amazing children.

We welcome volunteers from all cultures, professions, and social backgrounds. Volunteers must be at least 21, complete online modules, and participate in a live virtual two-day training, and be willing to submit a background check and child abuse registry check. Our administrative office is in Washington D.C., but volunteers' weekly visits take place at one of several facilities in Northern Virginia, Richmond, the Shenandoah Valley, Maryland, and West Virginia. Ranger's Refuge is the animal sanctuary arm of Gallastar Equine Center, Inc. We are a 501c(3) non-profit. With a main focus on pigs, we are currently home to almost 200 animals, including pigs, horses, ponies, donkeys, goats, cows, rabbits, chickens, and a turkey.

We are seeking coaches to help mentor our Fellowship Program. Our coaches work to connect the fellow with civic and career networks, ask non-judgemental questions to help projects grow, support fellows when things seem hard, and cheer on fellows when they find successes.

About the Fellowship:
The main purpose of our fellowship is to inspire civic innovators in our community. The more we support residents as co-creators in our community, the more our community will evolve into the dynamic and equitable place we aspire to be. We also hope to introduce fellows to how human-centered technology and data can support their existing goals and then help them find resources to implement such solutions.

Bring your expertise and creativity and share a passion of yours with the community by running a weekly group or workshop series for our mind/body or social support programming. In-person if outdoors, otherwise remote.

Recent programs have included: Yoga for POC, BIPOC Writing Unfiltered, Yoga for Self-Compassion, Learning to Love Your Whole Self, Knitting Circle, Art for Relaxation, and Introduction to Meditation. 

Volunteers play a vital role in SARA’s mission to educate our community and assist and empower people who have experienced sexual violence. Crisis Services Volunteers initially take shifts on our 24/7 hotline and then have the opportunity to move into other crisis services roles at our agency.

The SARA Hotline serves as an immediate response to survivors of sexual assault and their loved ones at the time the support is needed. No matter how long ago the assault occurred, the SARA hotline provides brief crisis intervention. Hotline volunteers help provide callers with appropriate referrals and resources to empower callers to make their own choices and conduct their own healing process. Hotline Volunteers provide immediate response at times when the office is closed, and act as “triage” when referring callers to other SARA resources.

In order to provide the best service to our clients, there is a mandatory interviewing, reference-checking, and 40-hour training process for all incoming volunteers.  SARA Hotline Volunteers MUST be at least 18 years old. Minimum volunteer commitment: 24 Hours/month, which immediately follows completion of training. Potential 4- or 12-hour shift blocks are available when the SARA office is closed (evenings, weekends, and holidays).  Hotline volunteers must commit to the Hotline Volunteer role for at least 1 year.

BECOMING A HOTLINE VOLUNTEER AT SARA:

SARA operates a 24-hour hotline that responded to over 500 calls in 2018. Our volunteers are a valued and integral part of the work we do. In order to provide the best service to our clients, there is a mandatory interviewing, reference-checking, and training process for all incoming volunteers.

Here is the typical time-line for a Hotline Volunteer:

APPLICATION:

All prospective volunteers must complete an application (https://forms.gle/XvrrEws7C6BZVF178) indicating interest, experience, and relationship with sexual assault and crisis. We are looking for caring, reliable, empathetic, and non-judgmental individuals who are willing to commit to emotionally challenging work. Additionally, all candidates must be at least 18 years of age in order to volunteer.

Volunteer candidates must attend an interview in order to determine aptitude for the training program and volunteer commitment. Interviews are generally 15-30 minutes long and focus on interpersonal skills and experience with crisis and sexual assault.

We require 3 references to be contacted per volunteer. These references may be friends, coworkers, supervisors, professors, fellow volunteers, etc. They may not be family members or therapists. The best people to list as references are people who have known the candidate for a long time, can speak to their ability to handle crisis situations, emotional stability, and reliability. Also essential is that the references are easily contacted by phone or email.

TRAINING:

Volunteers will be trained in many elements of crisis line work through the duration of training. Training consists of a mixture of lecture, small group activities and call simulation.

Friends of Esmont is in the process of restoring the historic Purvis Store building in Esmont. One of the activities planned for the building is to bring back a grocery store with coffee shop. Other activities will be included in the building such as art/craft spaces, museum/visitor center. Please help us with a Feasibility Study for Grocery Store at 7603 Esmont Road.

The volunteer serves as a residential caregiver to a small group of residents (co-workers), facilitating and supporting in various therapeutic workstations, and fully contributing and participating in community life and events. This position supports the mission of Innisfree Village as an intentional lifesharing community with adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

We need bright people who enjoy speaking with small groups about business topics. We train and provide the content. These days we are conducting these workshops and discussion forums virtually via zoom. Time commitment is about 2 to 4 hours per month.

It was discovered that our van is missing the Catalytic Converter and exhausts pipe.  We are hoping a volunteer can supply the parts or help service this need.

The van had regularly transported members, but it will be used for food delivery in partnership with a local food bank should it be able to be fixed and pass inspection.

Since its founding more than 100 years ago, Sentara Martha Jefferson has constantly evolved to meet the diverse healthcare needs of the patients who trust us with their care. Supporting our mission to improve health every day our volunteers make a difference by serving in a variety of volunteer opportunities.  We have openings at our Concierge desks, Labor and Delivery department check-in desk and as an Imaging escort.

In our activities department (assisted living and memory care) we have various volunteer opportunities available. Things from various arts and crafts to playing board and card games to cooking events and everything in between. We are also strongly encouraging volunteers to bring their special talents to Linden House to showcase as an audience or teach a group a new skill.

The Warehouse crew is responsible for moving, lifting, and carrying-out furniture to customer vehicles, unloading donations, and rearranging merchandise on the floor. If you're looking for a good way to stay moving and help your neighbors, there are few better ways.

Our Habitat Store is looking for volunteers willing to work in a sometimes fast paced environment at our cashier station. Volunteers should be comfortable working with a POS (point of sale) system on a computer and interacting with many shoppers. Join Habitat for Humanity of Greater Charlottesville as a Receptionist Volunteer (RV)!

The RV is the first face our visitors see when they walk through the door. RVs manage the phone line, help guests connect with the appropriate staff and process materials for Habitat Homebuyer applicants. RVs receive training on Habitat staff member roles/responsibilities in order to ensure excellent customer service. No computer skills are necessary, however, computer savvy RVs often help with data entry.

A typical RV shift is 4 hours, either 9am-1pm or 1pm-5pm, M-F. RVs volunteer once/week or once every other week. We are especially looking for RVs who can help fill in open shifts over the summer (May-August).

BACKGROUND: Founded in 1933, the International Rescue Committee is a leading, non-sectarian, non-profit organization providing emergency relief, protection, rehabilitation assistance, resettlement services, and advocacy for refugees and victims of oppression or violent conflict.  Domestically, our 22 offices across the U.S. ensure new arrivals have food, shelter, and clothing, and work with refugees to help them gain self-sufficiency.

Location: Client's home or another agreed-upon loaction.

Time Commitment: Minimum 6 month commitment. Minimum 2 hours per week. 

Responsbilities: Help newly arrived refugees learn English, and practice verbal and written communication. Serve as a friendly face and resource for clients to help them more easily integrate into the community.

Skills/Qualifications: Volunteers must have an excellent command of the English language, be culturally sensitive and respectful of diverse backgrounds, self-motivated and comfortable working with little supervision, and able to handle sensitive client information confidentially. Patience and creativity go a long way in this vital, independent role. Previous tutoring experience or knowledge of a second language is helpful, but not required. The IRC offers ESL training and optional curriculum as well as a limited number of additional resources.

We're interviewing for a volunteer clerical position with the Lewis & Clark Exploratory Center! We’re looking for an enthusiastic volunteer who will help write thank you letters, make database entries and corrections, and organize files. Knowledge of Word Office Suite essential. We’re looking for someone to come to the Lewis & Clark Exploratory Center every two weeks for an hour and a half to two hours as needed. We run children’s programs on a reservation basis, as well as during public open hours, so a background check is required if selected.
