Needs From: United Way of Greater Charlottesville

Volunteer: Mapping Albemarle: Racial Covenants

Help us log and map the racial covenants in Albemarle County's property records!

As part of the Mapping Cville project, we have currently gone through 70% of the racially restricted properties. With each logged record, we get a fuller map of just how widespread racist housing practices were in Albemarle County between 1890-1968.

We provide all the training you need, and within no time you'll be helping us log the details of these property records. Each record takes about 10 minutes to go through, so there is no time commitment. You can help for 10 minutes, or for 4 hours—every one is enormously valuable!

For more information or to help us, please contact Jordy Yager, the Director of Digital Humanities at the JSAAHC, at localhistory@jeffschoolheritagecenter.org

Volunteer: Remote: Collect & Make Cold Weather Packs for Unhoused Neighbors

*Please note this opportunity happens remotely in your own organization or space. Items should be collected and organized off-site and dropped off at The Haven once prepared.*

There are many community members -- both unhoused and those living in extreme poverty -- who depend year-round on The Haven day shelter as a resource center providing basic necessities like food, hygiene products, and free laundry services, as well as access to critically-needed housing programs.

We’re grateful for your help meeting some of these basic needs, especially during the cold, harsh winter months. Items can be placed in whatever "pack" you have: recycled grocery bags (paper or plastic), reusable totes, gallon ziplocs, drawstring bags, or any other type of bag.

Each pack must consist of the following items:

Adult-sized beanieAdult-sized pair of winter glovesLip balmCough drops or lozenges (at least 5)Optional add-ins include: hand or foot warmers, tissue packs, travel-sized Vaseline or body lotion, and scarves.

Once you’ve collected the supplies and organized the packs (at your own location), please reach out to Ocean Aiello to coordinate a drop-off. Drop-offs can occur any weekday between 7:00 am and 5:00 pm.

Don’t hesitate to reach out to ocean@thehaven.org or 434-973-1234 ext. 103 with questions. We are grateful for your willingness to participate!
