Description

Historic Germanna invites volunteers to spend the Day of Caring preserving three places where Virginia history is still visible in the landscape.

Teams will work outdoors alongside Historic Germanna staff to improve visitor access, care for a historic cemetery, and help protect significant archaeological sites for future research and public education.

Urquhart House Archaeological Site Clean-Up: Help reclaim access to the remains of the 18th-century Urquhart House, where two original stone chimneys still stand. Volunteers will clear excess vegetation around the site so visitors can better experience this remarkable piece of the region’s past.

Salubria Cemetery and Split-Rail Fence Care: At Salubria, a c. 1757 historic home in Culpeper County, volunteers will help maintain the community cemetery by clearing brambles and weeds. A second team can assist with spot repairs to the split-rail fence that helps define and protect the property. Salubria is approximately eight miles from the Historic Germanna Visitor Center.

Enchanted Castle Archaeological Site Clean-Up Work: at the Enchanted Castle site, part of the 1714 Germanna settlement established under Lt. Gov. Alexander Spotswood. Volunteers will help backfill completed excavation units and remove weedy overgrowth, supporting the ongoing care of a site that continues to reveal stories of the region’s earliest colonial settlers.

With the help of volunteers, this day will make a visible and lasting difference across Historic Germanna’s cultural landscapes while giving participants a hands-on connection to the people, places, and stories that shaped our region.
