Description

Now entering its third year and cohort, International Neighbors' STEPS program is a monthly support group for newcomer (refugee and SIV) women. During these meetings at the International Neighbor's office refugee women meet other  women with similar journeys and experience a welcoming space where they can be themselves and grow. Our multilingual Afghan Outreach Manager, Khatool, plans and facilitates each meeting, inviting other leaders from Charlottesville to teach on important topics such as stress management, parenting skills, English lessons, and navigating life in the US, The meetings also include creative outlets such as art, meditation and yoga.  The women find strength from one another, and have time to express concerns and hardships they are facing as newcomers.

Volunteers (only women) are needed to assist with childcare for about eight children at the International Neighbors office for the STEPS meeting on Sept 16th so that refugee mom's can be fully present in this support group meeting. Volunteers should plan and facilitate simple activities or games that will engage kids ages one to four years old. The IN office has books, puzzles, blocks, play doh and art supplies that volunteers and children can use to play together.
