Who We Are

The staff of Barrett Early Learning Center aim to meet the goals of the Center by:

  • Helping children learn to do things for themselves and to make decisions
    and choices.
  • Helping children learn to get along with others.
  • Helping children develop self-esteem and a positive self image.
  • Teaching children good health practices, hygiene and nutrition.
  • Providing a variety of experiences through learning by discovery.
  • Providing age-appropriate learning activities that will help prepare children for kindergarten and later schooling.

What We Do

Barrett Early Learning Center is a not-for-profit center, licensed by the Directors. It is the oldest, continuously operating child care center in the Commonwealth, organized in the fall of 1935 under the Works Progress Administration (WPA). Formerly known as Barrett Day Care Center, the name was changed in the summer of 2003 to reflect our emphasis on teaching and learning, with regard to all aspects of child development – social, emotional, intellectual and physical.

Barrett Early Learning Center exists to provide the highest quality early learning program in a safe and nurturing environment that encourages opportunities for physical, social, and intellectual growth in our children. We believe that a child’s early years provide the foundation for growth and development for the rest of her/his life. We believe that excitement for learning is best generated in a setting that presents challenging and supportive experiences which encourage creative thinking and problem solving; allows decision-  and choice-making within appropriate limits, and fosters love and respect for self and others.
