Who We Are

Accountability Statement

Big Brothers Big Sisters holds itself accountable to demonstrating outcomes in three critical areas for our Littles:

•socio-emotional competencies (e.g. higher aspirations, greater self-confidence, and better relationships)

•avoidance of risky behaviors

•educational success

How to Enroll:

Before we make a match, we do our homework. After someone expresses an interest in becoming a Big, they go through an extensive background check and careful interview process. Then we match Bigs and Littles based on location, personalities and preferences. And we provide full support from the start, so matches can grow into lasting, fruitful friendships. It’s also important to note that the entire matching process is made possible through donations — we can’t do what we do best without them!

Community- Based Mentoring: Our Bigs and Littles get together for one-to-one outings that take place in the community. Each match meets, on average, 2- 4 times per month for at least 1 year. As an agency we encourage free or low cost outings, and will provide you with plenty of ideas and agency-hosted events. You can spend time doing things you enjoy together, such as:

Going for a hike
Playing your favorite board game
Doing arts and crafts
Making ice cream sundaes
Watching a UVA sporting event
Cooking dinner together

What We Do

Big Brothers Big Sisters is the oldest, largest and most effective youth mentoring organization in the United States. Independent research shows that the Big Brothers Big Sisters model of professionally supported relationships between young people and their adult mentors has a direct, measurable and lasting impact. Children in our program perform better in school, are less likely to skip classes and school days, and more likely to avoid risky, unhealthy behaviors and have higher self-esteem and aspirations.
