Who We Are

Each year the Shelter responds to over 1,500 hotline calls, provides over 5,000 nights of safe shelter to more than 200 women and children, and assists many other victims of domestic violence through outreach services.

Shelter services include:

  • 24-hour crisis hotline
  • supportive individual and group counseling
  • case management
  • court accompaniment and legal advocacy
  • specialized services for children and teens
  • outreach and support to the Spanish-speaking community
  • community education
  • allied professional training

All shelter programs and services are free and confidential; designed to empower victims of abuse to become self-sufficient; assist women and children to break the cycle of abuse; and create a community that is more supportive of victims and holds abusers accountable for their actions.

What We Do

The Shelter for Help in Emergency is the only agency in the City of Charlottesville, and five surrounding counties of Albemarle, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa and Nelson providing comprehensive services to women and children who are victims of domestic violence.
