Needs in our community are not paused during the holiday season. In addition to the opportunities posted regularly here, look below at the special holiday needs and opportunities for ones that fit your interests and abilities. These are unique ways to explore your fit volunteering for a nonprofit. Don't forget to ask how you can stay involved in the new year!

 

Festive Runs, Walks, and Trots

38th Annual Boar's Head Turkey Trot November 28th 9 a.m.

5k race benefiting the UVA Children's Hospital. Sign up online.

Earlysville Turkey Trot November 28th 8:30 a.m.

5k race benefiting the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank. Half Mile Kids Run. Sign up online.

Monticello Holiday Classic 5K and Deck the Halls Kids Dash December 7th 8:20 a.m.

5K benefiting the Thomas Jefferson Foundation. Sign up online.

6th Annual Santa Fun Run and Walk December 8th 11 a.m.

One-mile fun run/walk benefiting the Arc of the Piedmont. Sign up online.

2019 Hunger Heroes 5k December 22nd 9:30 a.m.

A portion of the proceeds benefits Blue Ridge Area Food Bank. Sign up online.

New Year's Day 5K January 1st 11 a.m.

Volunteer Opportunities

Loaves and Fishes is a year-round food pantry in Albemarle. Check their online schedule for volunteer shift openings. Options to distribute food, restock, and/or work directly assisting clients. Regular shifts Tues-Sat. Sign up online.

Thanksgiving Box Program and Christmas Gift Program Organized by G.R.A.CE. in Greene County. Help needed with donations and distribution. Call 434-985-6792 or email Greenealliance@embarqmail.com for more information.

Toy Lift Volunteer in two hour shifts to set up, distribute, and/or clean up following a Toy Land distribution event. Runs December 5th-8th 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Use your volunteer time off hours if you have them! Sign up online.

Virginia Gingerbread Christmas Benefiting the Ronald McDonald House. Volunteer and enjoy the gingerbread houses on display. Shifts from Dec 6th-11th. Call Rita at (434) 295-1885.

Holiday Giving Boxes Help sort, pack, and deliver non-perishable holiday meal kits with PB&J Fund. December 6th from 6 p.m.-9 p.m. and December 7th 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Sign up online.

Red Kettle Campaign Ring the bell for Salvation Army. Appropriate for individuals, groups, and families. Choose from store locations throughout the community. Sign up online.

PACEM Hand out warm drinks from 5:30-6:45 while guests await evening transportation to an overnight shelter. Sign up online.

ReadyKids Holiday Party Help with their holiday party for pregnant and postnatal mothers. Volunteers can serve food and help at the cookie decorating table, the play dough station, and the "pictures with Santa" booth.  Help also needed for set up and clean up. JABA JABA has community centers for seniors in Charlottesville, Albemarle, Fluvanna, Louisa, Nelson, and Greene. Bring these seniors cheer by sponsoring and leading holiday-themed bingo. Host a collection for small prizes. For more info contact Winter at wbroadhurst@jabacares.org.
