The site tends to be wet so sturdy waterproof boots are suggested. All volunteers should supply their own work gloves. Masks are required. We have no bathroom facilities, power or running water on the site. Some activities are okay for children. Please specify if you plan to bring family when emailing rsvp@piedmontgarden.org.
Tasks Identified:
Move chippings to fill in the Children’s Garden and extend existing woodland trails and fill in wet areas along mowed trails with chippings. Ages 8 and up.
Move fallen logs, remove limbs where possible, position to edge newly mulched areas. Not recommended for children.
Prune plant growth impacting bench and gathering areas. Not recommended for children.
Tools & Materials Needed for Tasks:
6 - Mulch forks
9 - 12 Steel rakes
6 - Wheelbarrows
2 – Pruners or hedge shearers
3 – Handsaws or Loppers
Botanical Garden of the Piedmont will have 5 representatives available to lead the Task Teams.
Tasks Teams Needed:
6 teams of 1-2 volunteers - Move chippings to fill in the Children’s Garden and extend existing woodland trails and fill in wet areas along mowed trails with chippings (1 Wheelbarrow and a minimum 1 steel rake and 1 mulch fork needed per team.) Team members must be willing to come within close contact with one another. Family group teams are encouraged with adult supervision. Suggested ages of children 8 and over.
3 teams of 2 volunteers – Find fallen logs, remove limbs where possible, position to edge newly mulched areas. (1 steel rake, and a handsaw or lopper is needed per team. As are strong backs!) Team members must be willing to come within close contact with one another.
2 volunteers - Prune plant growth impacting bench areas and gathering areas. Hand pruners or hedge shearers are needed.
