Ivy Creek Nature Area and historic River View Farm serves Charlottesville and Albemarle county by preserving the historic home, barn, and land that was once home to Hugh Carr and his descendant Mary Carr Geer and her husband Conley Greer. This farm and natural area are on the National Register of Historic places because Hugh Carr, a once enslaved laborer, bought this land and was able to become one the largest African American landowners in the county. Mary Carr Greer did much for her community as an educator and has a local school named after her. Today we offer 7 miles of trails as well as historic interpretation of the historic house and barn.
For our service day, we will be working in two different areas of the nature area. Invasive plants have become a problem at Ivy Creek Natural Area (ICNA) and we are working hard to remove them and stop their spread. On this day, we'll focus on removing Knotweed stalks, pulling Bittersweet from trees and out of the ground, and consolidating some brush piles for easier removal.
Our other focus will be trail clean-up, the recent snowstorms caused many trees to fall, which has blocked many of our trails. We will be working to remove trees and limbs from the trails so that the public can enjoy the trails in a safe way.
Wearing appropriate clothing is important, this includes close-toed shoes. Bring work gloves, long-handled loppers, hand clippers, small pruning saws, garden rakes, spades or shovels, or other tools you may have.
